I've done the whole "off the grid" thing already. Just the same I crunched and recrunched the Tyvek for a good while and was still too stiff. So I just tossed it in the wash and dry with another load of laundry. That makes it a lot better. Will find out when I get back to the back yard and set it down. If it scares all the spring frogs I'll know it's still too crunchy.

A note on the tyvek: I always used to use it but after a couple trips where I had rain, I just ended up with a wet, muddy groundcloth that I'd have to put on the outside of my pack somewhere. I think part of it is that it eventually wears out if you put it in the washer after a trip.

Now, I switch back and forth from the following: a section of heavy plastic sheeting that you would use for a tent groundcloth or my silnylon rain kilt that I usually have with me anyway.

Another option for getting you pack off the ground just involved balancing it on my lightweight folding camp chair.

At night if I expect weather I put my pack in the compactor bag and lay it under the tarp.
That is what I did on a trip this past week. Started raining so we set up camp early. Put up tarps first then the hammocks. Placed pack inside trash compactor bag and placed under hammock. Stayed dry.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

I'm primarily a canoe hanger, so the weight penalty isn't an issue for me. Recently I have been warming up to Gear hammocks, especially the Simply Light Designs waterproof verison and MollyMacGear with the SEEP. The price points are about the same. I will probably end up pulling the trigger sooner than later on one of them.

Right now though I just hang my bag on the foot end of hammock or on a tree branch with a spare biner.

Yep, MUCH quieter yet still too scrunchy. My traipsing through the deadwood on the ground didn't silence the frogs, but putting out the tyvek and setting my bag on it sure did. Think I'll try some polycro.

Something iv'e been experimenting with is to put my empty pack (ULA Circuit) into a full size pillow case, which i also use as my clothes bag, and then in the hammock with me. I put it under my knees when lying on my back to eliminate hyper extension and calf ridge, or between my knees when lying on my side.. Its been really comfortable testing it at home. Hoping to try it out in the field in the near future.

Yet another great use for a pillow case! Nice idea. You will probably like to watch these videos:

Great videos. I did add a simple draw string closure to mine with some zing it and a cord lock..

I think you want the “Contractor Bag” not the compactor bag you are showing.

I've used the trash compactor bags for several years. They are pretty sturdy.
