How much would it help to use the fly/tarp brought all the way to the ground around the sides of a hammock to block any breeze and thus make cooler weather temp more bearable in a hammock?

It helps a lot..... That is why a lot of small stock flies get replaced with larger tarps.

It makes things a lot more bearable. That same technique is also great with heavy rains. Lower the height of the tarp, bringing it as close to the top of the hammock as possible, and then bring the sides in close and stake the tarp directly to the ground. As long as you have oriented your tarp perpendicular to the weather it should give you a lot of protection.

Michele, now known as Certain, is thru hiking and is on trailounals.com. During the colder parts of her trip she talked about piling leaves up along the bottom edge of the tarp at the ground to provide more insulation and wind block.

i have a time or two, laid logs on top of the guy line, stakes, & edge of the tarp on the windward side to seal that side off.
of course, if you can find a place to hang that's protected from the wind, that's the 1st & best approach.
but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way<g>.
last winter blackbishiop & i were using the same spot that he & ncpatrick had used the night before & there was basically no wind... until night fall.
then it picked up more & more. it was howling
my hammock was under this tarp... http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery...5/P2180026.JPG
