Hammer, Hammer, Hammer, Pound, Pound, Pound

After many a time forgetting to take a hammer, mallet or hatchet with me on a camping trip, I have become quite adept at pounding stakes in the ground with a reasonably sized log .

What do you use to get your stakes in the ground? Any funny stories associated with using unconventional methods?

Years ago I reached back and picked up a flat rock to pound a stake in while on a scout camping trip to the top of Lick Mtn in Caldwell County, NC. Out of the corner of my eye I caught the tail of a copperhead slithering off to my right from where I grabbed the rock. That was the begining of the snakes ... we counted 14 in the immediate area we'd set up camp ...

Let's just say we hiked off the mountain in the dark and camped out back of the one leader's house that night. Seems Lick Mtn is or was a haven for copperheads in vast numbers back in the day!

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

In soft soil I step on my stake, in hard soil I use a rock to pound it in.

LOL .Nothing gets a scout leader more nervous than every other thing moving in camp being poisonous.

Rock, yup I find a rock, once or twice a stick. Took a cheap hatchet a few time, but hated the weight, now I have a good hatchet but it only goes on winter or car camp trips.

I look at my stakes angrily, sometimes I say mean things to them. They borrow into the ground on their own.
