I've had just the opposite impression from the one I've got. I've used it for a couple of years and it has held up well. But, I haven't used it in a backpacking environment...yet.

I haven't dismissed the idea yet, especially since they're only $7 and change. I'll probably order one to compare with the laptop fan once I get the laptop fan done. It might be nice to have the little built in light; is it a LED?

You could always wire up 4 AA/AAA's in a series for the usb fan. It would slightly increase the output of the fan, and depending on what type of battery you use, would probably increase the fan's run time decently. There would realy be no need for th usb connection, so personally, I would remove it and just put in a lightweight switch.
The foam blades would probably be a little more effecient, since they most likely, have a much smaller rotational inertia.

for the last 2 yrs i have been using a inclosed fan that was designed to wear around your neck...it is basicaly a bird cage idea and it puts out lots of air..the big advantage to me is it rund all night on aa batteries...plus it puts the air out in a sort of up and right pattern...i hang it fro mmy ridge line in my hh and it blows cool air down ward from my feet al the way to my head...i have even on several occasions had to shut it off during the night cause it was doing so well i got cold...got it at wally world for 3 bucks i think..

yep, just like a air little air movement in the cold weather changes things & can cause you to look for a way to stay warmer, that air movement in hot weather can turn misery into pleasure.
