    More HH destruction.

Someone PM me about the bug netting off the HH I took apart. It reminded me that I should share with you all what eventually happened to that poor parallelogram. I used it to make my own enclosed hammock. During a testing hang I found out some structural defects of my design. Check out the pics.

Wow, that looks like a disaster. What's the story behind the destruction? Did you hit the ground hard?

    Bummer dude!

So if a hanger is alone in the woods, and his hammock rips, does he make a sound when his butt hits the ground?

I have to disagree. My studies (poorly tied knots) have shown that if you hit hard enough your ears will start ringing, and there is no sound. A great defense mechanism to keep you from hearing the laughter of the local wildlife.

The real story is that I kind of did this on purpose. I wasn't expecting the bug net to rip too though. It was an experiment where I mimicked the HH but with a zipper instead of the velcro for the opening. The piece of fabric I used was 1.1 nylon. During the construction I had nicked a hole in it near the center end of the zipper opening. After getting in and out a few times eventually the small hole had started to get a little bigger. When I was done with my prototype analysis (zipper worked OK, but overall not what I was going for) I decided to do some strength testing on the tear. I pretty much bounced up and down while sitting in the hammock. My weight centered over the tear. The big ripping sound started and I kind of slid down out of the hole *** first. I wasn't far off the ground to begin with. I was laughing pretty hard and decided I should get out the camera phone and get a pic right then and there. I was still laughing until I noticed the rip had spread up into the bug netting.

Sounds like your hammock bug netting got the last laugh...
