A night in Keeney Swamp Forest, NY

Did a quick rainy overnighter with the new hammock in Keeney Swamp State Forest.

I was in my new (to me) Dream Hammock Raven, with Mountainsmith mountain shade tarp. My buddy Eric was in his ENO Doublenest.

I love the new hammock but I’ll need some more practice with the suspension - (Dutch whoopies). I found it to be a little too taut, and couldn’t get the right hang without touching the ground. It made for a less than perfect sleep, but still better than sleeping on the ground in a tent. I think it’s hard to get the straps high enough on the tree since I’m pretty short at 5’6”

    (Any tips are appreciated)

    Very nice.

On the problem of being closer to the ground, it sounds like the trees are farther apart than you are used too. The farther apart the trees the higher the straps need to be. I found for me that a little tension on the ridge line is ok. Just enough to make up for the distance of the trees. Otherwise try to find closer trees.

Looks like a great trip! Thanks for the report! If you use hiking poles, you can employ them to shimmy your tree straps a good bit higher on the tree than what you can reach with your arms. My friend, FiveTango has a forked attachment that he sticks on the end of his poles that makes it even easier than using the pointed end.

Thanks for the tip. Though I’m not sure if trees closer together would help. Because I already has the whoopie slings at the shortest they could go.

Yeah that’s probably what I’ll need to do. Just hope I can get them back down! Hahaha
