Would an under quilt in the shape of a parallelogram be an advantage over a rectangle? After all, we lay on a diagonal (in a gathered end hammock).
If a rectangular quilt were 40" wide x 50" long, the diagonal would be 64" long. But, if you start with 40" wide x 58" long material and cut off a triangle measuring 40" x 8" at both the head & foot ends (opposite orientation from each other), you would have a parallelogram.
The finished quilt would still have the original 50" long side edges and still be 40" wide but, with a long diagonal of 70", that's 6" longer! Plus, the corner of the quilt under your left shoulder would provide better coverage, I think.
The total materials in the finished quilt would be the same, therefore the same weight & volume. It's true that there would be a little wasted nylon from the cuts but, one can never have too many stuff sacks :-)
