Has anyone use a tarp like you buy at walmart, lowes, or home depot. If so do they work well. Kinda on a budget and can't afford sil nyl right now.
thanks

I'll be the first to say it, check out the Guide Gear Tarp.

I have one, and really like it. Nice coverage, great price, and ships really fast.
I don't see any reason why those tarps won't work. It's just something you really would want to hike with due to bulk and weight. But if that's what you need to do at this point go right ahead. Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done.

But it fits the budget...10 oz and a few cubic inches isn't much if the uber-stuff is out of the price range!
Neo had a more expensive tarp and went back to that Guide Gear one.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
The only problem I have with the cheap wal-mart tarps is they are hard to get taught and they are very noisy. On an overnight I took with my mom to convince her that hammocks are the answer life's problems, I had the guide gear tarp and she had a wal-mart tarp. Her tarp kept her wake all night until she eventually got up and took it down. Luckily it didn't rain like it was supposed to.
I won't be hiking too much. I'm just getting back to camping and I know this is more comfortable than a tent. I was just wondering if they would work. I'm not too concerned about weight. Just want to make sure I can stay dry. May be camping and hanging out at a local lake I go to, or maybe going to the Red river gorge
