    Rain sleeve

    Rain sleeve,
Well pardon me with another newbie idea. But why not make a water proof sleeve? I imagine my hammock with a bug sleeve, and if it rained I could then just pull the water proof sleeve up and over, instead of a staked out tarp.

I already have an 8 foot long tent made from an 8x10 sil-nylon tarp. Whay can't I put the ridge line through a hole in the back and use it as a rain sleeve?

you're basically wanting to take that tent and suspend it all around the tarp like a floating bivy? it may work hehehe. i'd think you'd probably have some condensation issues, and maybe water issues where the sil comes in contact w/ your hammock. it's kind of a neat idea though

The capillary action of water is going to be one of the biggest issues to work around. Water will run down your suspension line, through the hole in the waterproof sleeve and spread from there. I think is you used a ring or something that would stop the water on your suspension line from entering you may have something. Although, as stated, condensation could be pretty bad, as well as if there's any bleed-through where the "waterproof" fabric touches things.

All that said, I'm not so sure anyone has actually made what you're talking about and I for one would love to here actual field results from such a device.

On, one more thing to be very leery of... Be sure you won't suffocate in it! If its waterproof, chances are its also not going to breathe enough to give you fresh air. Something to keep in mind.

Sil isn't breathable. That's not a good thing to surround your body with, unless you can hold your breath for a REALLY long time...

Plus I'd like a dry area to unpack, cook, pack up, etc.

The rain sleeve/sock idea sounded good at first to me when I was thinking about it too, but then as littlefield indicated you'd have water issues. You could use a very small tarp and then have the rain sock as extra protection and that might work, but not leave you any work room when the weather is nasty.

How do/would you get out when it is raining?
Looks kind of like a large version of my hammock sock, & to get out of that I have to do just like a sock on your foot/leg. If that was my only cover, all of my bedding, & me would get wet during a storm, or even a light rain.

I've been thinking about this. I know that really serious rain may get through, but then this is all relative, so what if some moisture gets through?

My plan. I will use a separate ridge line (already in the tent) and tie it to the trees about a foot above my hammock lines, this will hold the tent up and allow the screened ends to ventilate. I will have to make another end about 3 feet long because the tent isn't long enough. I will put velcro around the end of the tent so I can pull the tent up into place and attach the two halves (3/4 and 1/4) together above my head, and I will put a slit 3 feet long along one lower edge of the tent and velcro it for getting in and out.

This may not as weather worthy of a setup as a full tent , err you guys call it a tarp, set up over the hammock, but it will be lighter and have no guy lines and be bug proof and ventilated through screen on each end. It will also have an integral tent to sleep in if I prefer that to hanging. I will have photos in a week or so.

The first rule they taught us in survival training was to stay dry and keep our gear dry. Just sayin'.
