    Yet Another Fabric Thread

I have read the other fabric threads, really I did. They just introduced like 4 more possibilities and confused me even more.

So I went to Fabric Land, here in Canada. Asked them for the rip stop nylon. Was directed to an area that had rip stop nylon. The bolt said rip stop nylon, and regretfully didn't really test it.

They do have the grid pattern.
    One side is shiny.
    Can not pull air through.
Works like a water bucket with like 1L or 33 fl oz.
Playing with a fresh cut edge, it doesn't fray rubbing parallel to the cut, but full sized strands do come off if I pull perpendicular to the cut.
    Please see attached photos.

What I was really looking for was uncoated rip stop nylon which I know it is not. But I don't know what the hell coating it has or if it's bad or not.

I was going to build an SPE out of it but if my newb mind has learned anything than making an SPE out of waterproof material will cause me to wake up in a puddle, correct?

If I can't make an SPE out of this material can I get a list of things to do cause I now have 4m (use my sig) of this material.

    Thanks for the help.

Since the ccf pad isn't breathable I can't see it making that much of a difference but, I've never used a spe.

Sounds like it's calendared with a heavy DWR treatment. Like beast said, can't imagine it'd make much of a diff. with a pad. Might not want to make a hammock out of it, but for this it would probably work passably.

Possibly Polyurethane coating as well. Wouldn't want it for a hammock I don't think. Could be like sleeping in a bathtub if you sweat a lot. Weather cover would be possible. Go buy another length of it and make a heavy but very waterproof tarp. 4 Meters is a heck of a lot for an SPE. If worst comes to worst... stuff sacks and ditty bags are always an option.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

That's true, forgot about the pads. I just remember a lot of people up in arms about hammocks being made out of waterproof materials and extended it to an SPE.

    Thanks all

Sounds like polyurethane coated ripstop to me, but it's hard to say over the internet. A SPE should be ok b/c the pads are already non-breathable.

I've slept in a PU hammock before (the Crazy Crib) and it actually wasn't bad...no more sweating than other hammocks, surprisingly. Not sure why. Others have made them from sil and cuben and I haven't heard any serious complaints about them. Wouldn't want to try one in summer, though.

A tarp would be pretty heavy, but if you're car camping then who cares?

Stuff sacks would be a bit heavier, but then it's probably only 2-3 ounces total so that's not so bad.
