yeah, it's only a matter of time. This liquid grip is a rubber like coating that you can paint, dip or spray on tools and it drys into a rubber grip. Perhaps the same effect could provide a protective coating on the edges. Dip it, let it dry and then thread the string through. It's just crazy enough to work. I've got some spray on we were using to try and repair some old cheap soccer goalie gloves to be serviceable for practice gloves (verdict still out on that, the foam palm wants to absorb the liquid), but I think the dip would be better to get a good coat. It might even provide a bit of guyline grip for your tent stake concept Sgt.

FWIW, I chamfer the edges of my solid AL toggles. Mount one like a bit in a drill, pull the trigger and hold the edge at an angle against a bench grinder or belt sander. They come out like so:

I like the idea of the solid toggle. What diameter rod is that? Bought at HD? I've seen some alum. rod at HD but wasn't sure if it was too thin. I want to say I recall it being 1/8" or less.

I began with 1/4" aluminum rod that I got at HD. The one in the pic, though, is cut from a Walmart tent stake, which is slightly less than 1/4" diameter. I get 4 toggles from one stake.

I asked one of my outdoorsy type friends at work if he knew where I could get some old arrow shafts. He showed up at work the next day with a mixed bundle of aluminum and carbon fiber shafts for me. Said he had a whole box in his basement.
