eVent Dry Sacks for Down Insulation

I was looking at the Sea to Summit eVent compression dry sacks at REI yesterday. On my upcoming rafting trip on the Middle Fork Salmon River, I will be provided two heavy duty dry bags to store my gear. One will be for getting into during the day and one for shelter and bedding but not accessible during the day. My past experience in the Grand Canyon has shown that there is always the possibility of some leakage and dampness always seems to permeate everything inside. I was thinking about placing my down insulation in one of these eVent dry sacks, inside the heavy duty dry sack. I know they are supposed to be waterproof, but I wonder if they are vapor proof?

I have one of these that I used on my last AT section hike as my food bag (got it on sale and they let me use a coupon even though they weren't supposed too) and I hung my bag on several nights in the rain and never had a problem. Not sure this helps you as what you are going to use it for would really test it's ability, but with it being inside another dry sack I couldn't foresee it being a problem (but you know Murphy and his law!?!?) Hope this help's.

the pnly foolproof system that has worke e every time for me is contractor bags. STuff sacks, especially event can be heavy, and you find yourself carrying several. JRB sells plain ol silnylon ones that are pretty light, come in several sizes.

    Trash compactor bags.

I have some contractor bags... heavy duty trash bags. I agree that they are the best way to waterproof the contents of a stuff sack. When waterproofing, belt and suspenders works well.

Those Sea to Summit eVent bags are great for down quilts. Keeps them completely dry. I try not to compress them too much though. Don't want to ruin the down. And definitely don't store them long-term like that.

No long term storage intended. I just want to try to keep them fluffy and dry during the day while on the river. Maybe the trash bag idea could work since they will already be protected by the heavy duty dry bag. I could stuff a few extra in somewhere in case I tear one. I'm not as concerned about weight this year since I will not have to pack my gear in/out like I did the last two years in GC.

Since your not concerned about weight then I say go for it with the Sea to Summit bag, I will say that the Contractor bags do work very well and can be used for alot of different things ie; pack liner, dry bag, rain skirt, poncho, make-shift gear loft, make-shift hammock rain end cover etc... Either one will work for you, just need to decide or you can take both!?
