    Hammock Camping with a Dog?

I've been hiking for years with our 60lb Lab and want to move from my MSR Trekker tent (fly only) to a Hennessey Hyperlight A-Sym. I'm determined to be in a hammock by the start of next season. The only problem is that I want to keep my dog comfortable and out of the elements (we always share a Thermarest) I was thinking of a larger tarp and small pad to curl up on. I did get a few great ideas from Just Jeffs hammock page but I'd like to know what everyone else does. Thanks.

if you use a large tarp & hang fairly close to the ground, your dog could probably lay right up against the bottom of your hammock.
but if you're not already set on a HH, i would give some thought to a top entry type hammock.
i like being able to reach stuff, & being able to reach down & reassure the dog would be helpful i think. you couldn't do that w/ a hh.
and welcome to hammock froums. ...tim

Not to long ago I went camping with my 3 dogs. They ended up sleeping under my tarp and hammock. It might be tricky trying not to step on your dog when you get out of the HH but you could put the pad closer to the head of the hammock to avoid this.

How about a thermarest or some other kind of pad on the ground for the dog with a small "doggie tarp" for it? Dry dog, happy owner.

My 60lb Dal has gotten in the hammock with me... but......

This past weekend I took a pad (for dogs) that was designed to go in stuff sack. (Small, little weight) I use a homemade 10x12 cat cut tarp. We had some good rain friday night. (We did double hang friday night. See pics below.) Sat night was single hang.

A little sheet of plactic, his pad, and a small fleece blanket put just about up under me and he stayed dry, happy and warm. (of course he is not happy about not being in the mammock.) THOUGHT: make a small hammock for the dog?....hmmmm)

    Good luck.

I have thought about how much the heavy rip stop can take as far as the toe nails go.

I originally got to Hammock Forums via the owner of "Traildog.com(net?) He uses a Speer with the large Speer tarp to cover both he and his dog. I don't know what his dog sleeps on. Maybe he'll pipe in.
