...so Randy, what's your point? He wanted negatives not a description of my world.

#1) Temperature. You _almost_ need to buy special gear to keep warm, when the old sleeping-bag was fine on the ground.

    #2) Proper tree spacing.
This is only problem based on where you go. My last 3 outings were: Groomed Provincal Park, Woodlot on farmers field, Groomed Provincal Park.

In the parks, the trees were too far apart. I had a difficult time finding some that would work ok. (but I did find them)
In the woodlot, there was too much underbrush. There was no place to hang because there were too many saplings inbetween the good trees. The brush was too dense to hang/walk in.

These problems are very area dependent. I bet folks have a hard time finding a spot to hang in parts of Arizona too.
    I ride a recumbent.
I like to HAM it up on the CW.
    I use Linux.
    I play go.
Of course I sleep in a hammock!

The only negative is I don't get to practice it more often! OK ... maybe JustJeff has something ... I tend to hang in the hammock longer in the morning than I ever did in a tent. On second thought ... how's that a negative?

    +1 proper tree spacing.
I probably have a somewhat unique problem here in the highlands of Utah, but sometimes I want to camp above the tree line.

If trees are about, then even if it takes a few min I can usually find somewhere to pitch, but once you are above the tree line, sometimes i have to go to ground for which I am never as well prepared as if I was tarp/tent camping.

There are things you can do to bring this down though:

use 2/3 or 3/4 uqs instead of fulls
    Use lightweight tq's
Use whoppie slings instead of straps
Use trail sticks as toggles for your tarp and hammock connections
    Get/Make a cuben tarp(price but insanely light)
make hammock out of cuben(pricey but insanely light)

If you do all these things theres no reason why your hammock setup could not be as light as a ground setup.

Honestly, to me, the biggest issue are other peoples' perceptions and their associated lectures. I wish I could count the number of times people have told me I can't use a hammock to camp in the winter, bear burrito, lightning rod, blah, blah, blah. I get tired of hearing it constantly.

Then again, the mischievous side of me kind of likes getting those folks all worked-up and bothered. Guess it's a draw.

Other people. Seriously, you would think I had not just stayed dry all night in the rain and rolled out well rested and happy - all those crazy people laying out their sleeping bags and inside out tents to dry STILL think I'm nuts sleeping in a hammock. Even when the only thing I'm drying in the sunshine next to ALL their clothes and gear is my tarp.
