Bad news for NC state parks....

I just got back from South Mountain State park where a ranger advised me that they just got a "memo" in regards to hammock use in the parks. They no longer allow hammocks in their parks. I explained using wide straps around the tress and all, which he thought was good as he was familiar, but said the state decided it was easier to ban them all than to ban certain types of suspensions. What led up to this was that the ranger actually asked what kinda tent setup I had. Luckly for me, I had just picked up a 1 man tent from REI with my dividend so I could still camp. It was a deal I couldn't pass up and I was planning to use it for campgrounds. I hate telling this, but would rather you know now.

That is bad news! I think I'll call them tomorrow & see who's behind this.

Yeah, I was planning to hike in myself. Just curious, at many state parks you fill out paper work, drop it off and take off. So who would know anyway?

The campground where Ed Speer's hangs happen is private.

That's truly disappointing news ... and from my experience with Geocaching back nearly 9 years ago with NC State parks ... the rangers and one's doing the work have 95% of the time approached everything from practical application. Unfortunately when it comes to Raleigh ... that's kinda where it gets screwed up.

I'm like Shug ... day trips to State Parks ... I still occasionally do if I have a reason but other than that ... too much hassle for my gathering Old Fart status to deal with. Besides ... I likes the Gorge best of all! Thank God that's under the US Forestry Service as scary as that might sound vs the state!

What idiot made that decision? Clearly made by the ignorant and uninformed. Like Shug said, just another reason to avoid state parks. It's a shame too, because so many state parks are great places to camp for an easy overnighter just to get away for the night. Oh well, good excuse to go hike someplace else.
