    Freth from Delaware, Ohio...

Hello. I'm completely new to hammocks. In fact, I have yet to sleep in one.

I happened upon the Hennessy site in my search for camping gear to go along with my new (used) Jeep and my newfound sense of adventure. The concept of the camping hammock is perfect for what I was looking for, so I did the research and decided to support Brandon and get a Warbonnet BB, combined with a MacCat Ultra tarp. I am still waiting patiently on the orders to be fulfilled.

My intention is to become a light backpacking camper. I have always been the typical camping type--pitch a tent and carry loads of gear. Since I've found out about camping hammocks, tents suddenly become obsolete and so does lugging heavy, unnecessary gear.

My camping of choice is primitive camping, so the hammock fits with where I want to go with my Jeep. I've also had an interest in learning survival techniques and familiarizing myself with local plant life. Thanks to this forum and the hammock community it's all coming together. The amount of valuable insight on this forum will give me everything I need to become a hanger deluxe and bring out the true outdoorsman in me.

EDIT: I forgot to mention... I'm also a geocacher and amateur nature photographer.

    Welcome!!!

You've done a good job of research and made wise gear choices so far. There is a bit of a learning curve for some but the fiddling and adjusting and trying new things is half of the fun.

Read lots and don't be shy about asking questions. This is a great place to learn and since you are a photographer, we'll be expecting pics of set up and cool places you hang.

    Hello Neighbor!

Always great to see another Buckeye here on HF! Welcome to elevated camping. If you cant find a specific question via the search function, ask away! You will not find more knowledgeable people regarding hammock camping (along with MANY other things) in any other place.

    Welcome to the high life
Looks like you have made some great gear choices but don't forget about the under insulation (cover your backside). I can say that Stormcrow make a "SWEET" underquilt, I don't have any experience with the Yeti but there are ALOT on here that have one and love it. All of the cottage maker's make top gear, and you will find pretty much all of them on here. Once again welcome to HF!!!!

    Thank you for the welcomes.

Yes, a UQ was going to be my next major purchase, but I do have all spring and summer to invest in one. I'm currently trying to gather together some light-weight camping gear. I have a good idea what all I need to get, it's just finding the money to buy it. Yes, I'll definitely post some pics as soon as I have them. I plan on testing out my new gear one of the next few weekends. Still waiting on it to arrive. Next week maybe? I'm in no hurry.

It's great to see some fellow Buckeyes on the forum too.

Although I am a naturalized Texan, been here for nearly 40 years, I was born in Sandusky and lived my first 9 months in Huron before heading south. So technically I am part of that Buckeye group as well.

Welcome, Freth! Although I am not from Ohio, I am from Delaware.

I would offer one word of advise:Try pads for your bottom insulation before investing in an UQ. Pads are hands down the lightest, cheapest alternative, and if you are comfortable with them, then you can save yourself some duckets.

It's a small world when it comes to people, but a bit world when it comes to places to hang.

Great. Thank you for the advice. I'll look on the forum for pad suggestions.

Nice to see Buckeyes populating the forum. I'm in Columbus, but a stone's throw from Hilliard.

This site is a great resource, especially if you start making your own gear. There's a lot of brain power on this site (myself excluded), where people engage in the good old tradition of tinkering. I'm always impressed with the thought and creativity that folks put into this hobby.

    Welcome aboard.
