    Complete Hanging System

I'm looking to give hanging a real try, I've never slept well on the ground, regardless of what I try. A hammock is the obvious choice.

I've tried a Hennessy but didn't like the bottom entry, just felt wrong for a hammock. I also have an ENO doublenest which I love for day hikes but it would require too much to use for 3 season backpacking.

I've been looking at Clarks and WB since they're made in the states and offer the integrated bug netting but I'm open to any other options.

    I need the following:

    - low pack weight and volume
    - preferably made in the US
    - support my 6'3" 180 lb body
    - keep me warm into the teens (pad or UQ?)

I hate to be lazy and ask for everyone else to figure out what I need but many of you have already tried the many hanging options and could save me a lot of time and money.

    Thanks!

    MR L:
why not just order the ENO bug net and then get a tarp. You could also give Warbonnet a look, he has a bug net that should fit and he makes a very good tarp from what I have seen reported. He also makes highly regarded UQ's and TQ's.

I have the CJH NX-200 with a cinch buckle/strap set-up that I like a lot. I have purchased 2 KAQ New River quilts that I run as top and bottom insulation. I have gotten down to mid 20's in this setup. I changed the RX-200 tarp out for a BWDD Winter Dream tarp last fall, will alternate back to the RX_200 during the summer to save a little weight, and have been nothing but please so far.

I will make the suggestion like others will and say that if you can get to a group hang and try out other peoples set-ups. Most people don't mind and are eager to show off their rigs.

I'll give a quick +1 for keeping the eno. This thread is a good read regarding bug netting.

+2 on the ENO. i have been using mine for now would be 9th yr. just replace the ropes/biner with either whoopies or ahe adjustments, get WB bug net(lighter and easier to use than the eno bugnet) add a ridgeline also.

I'd like to get a completely new sleep system, what about this...

    Hammock: Warbonnet Blackbird
    Tarp: OES ?
Insulation: JRB Mt. Washington 3 (maybe 4 due to the sale)
Suspension: whoopie slings, seem to be the way to go

I'd like to get it right the first time, hows that system sound?

All good choices...but for what area of the country and temperature ranges?

If you are wanting to do some lighter weight backpacking, a 2/3 or 3/4 length UQ can save you some weight and bulk and can still provide good insulation down to some pretty cold temps. The JRB stuff is good...as is Warbonnet Dude's Yeti, Stormcrow's Crow's Nest and Arrowhead Equipment's KAQ UQ's. (If I've left out someone, my apologies! You know when you get older you forget some ....uh...things.)

OES MacCat Deluxe is a great tarp and can be made in SpinnUL for lighter weight (albeit more money!) or silnylon. Consider adding the Grizz Beaks (from 2Q/ZQ's shop) if you want additional weather protection and/or end flaps. There are other good tarp choices as well.

For now, keep the ENO, add the WB Traveler Bugnet (half the weight of the ENO bugnet) and a OES SpinnTex tarp (more expensive, but lighter and stronger than silnylon) in your favorite size (I use a 8X10 rectangular OES Spinntex for summer, a 10X11 JRB silnylon for winter). If you have more money to spend, consider getting the WB Black Bird hammock from the start. More comfortable and, I think, lighter than the ENO with WB Bugnet. I use the cinch buckle suspension, but get what you think is best - just be sure you use at least one inch straps around the trees. How low a temperature you can go depends more on your upper and lower quilts, pads, etc. I use a Nunatak Alpine quilt above and a JRB NS below. Gets me to the upper thirties comforably, but I'm a warm sleeper.

Hammock: Warbonnet Blackbird Double Layer 1.1 oz ($175)
Tarp: OES MacCat Deluxe SpinnUL ($160)
    Insulation: Warbonnet 3-Season Yeti ($200)
Suspension: Stock WB adjustable webbing ($0)

I'll use my Marmot Helium bag as my top insulation.

I'm getting closer to deciding at least.
