Yesterday the mailman dropped off my new Mamajamba tarp in SpinnUL kinda late in the afternoon. I hadn't made a ridgeline for it and the Kelty Triptease was on backorder at REI but I just had to get out and string it up. You know the feeling.
I was burning daylight so I jammed some food and gear in my pack and headed a couple of miles up the mountain behind my house to a favorite spot near a big bat cave. Views are spectacular, bats exit the cave around sunset in droves but nothing like before they were wiped out by the White Nose Virus.
Arrived in time for a setup with daylight. ****, left my Tree Huggers wrapped around the trees in my backyard. I do stuff like this when I hurry. Luckily I had stuffed a bunch of odd pieces of line to use for guylines and was able to get everything up and hanging nicely before dark. Hiked to the bat cave to enjoy a little red wine and watch the bats head out for their nightly feast. Back to camp for a little dinner while sitting in my hammock comfortably. Made a small fire to clear the mosquitos off the ridge and enjoyed the view of the valley below at night.
Temp was supposed to get to 40 so I had brought an extra RidgeRest pad to stuff in the pocket with the GG Thinlite. Was too warm! Ended up with the sleeping bag unzipped halfway all night. The GG would have been enough I am sure. a 5 ounce UQ! I think it only got down to about 46.
My dog chased a porcupine away from camp in the middle of the night. I got up and found the porky treed and urinating down the tree. Probably in fear! Luckily my dog is well behaved and as soon as I heard her take off after it I ordered her to stop and she did. No quills tonight!
Morning broke clear and beautiful. "Breakfast in the hammock!" as Shug would say and then I stashed the gear and summited Mount Aeolus before 9. Home by ten thirty.
Mamajamba worked nicely since it didn't rain but it looks to be very well made and whisper light at 11 ounces.
Breakfast in the hammock at sunrise.....
