Tonight's episode of The Pacific on HBO featured WWII era issue hammocks with mesh and rain fly. Robert Leckie was using one in Cape Gloucester in the middle of the intense rains there in a base camp area.
I enjoyed reading Eugene Sledge's account of using his hammock on his last night on Pelelieu in With the Old Breed, a major reference for The Pacific. He mentions how incredibly comfortable his hammock was after 6 weeks on the ground. And how he had to bail out after about 10 minutes when stray Japanese tracers streamed under his hammock in a supposedly secured area. Very cool to see these fairly bulky, but obviously comfortable models in action.
