I would be leery of hanging my pack right up against the tree trunk- seen too many ant trail/invasions along that route-naturally your situation will vary according to weather, season and local ecology; but here in TX/OK the ants are able to get into everything.

I use the gear hammock ( I call it my basement) and have some shots in my videos. I love it. it keeps the gear:

    -Off the ground
    -in one location
    -dry
    -easy to get to
    -organized

    Plus it just looks cool

It only weighs a 12 ounces. Sure a garbage bag is lighter, but my basement keeps everything off the ground.

    -Suspension is 550 para cord

-hammock uses the gathered-end method and is gathered in such a way that it
    self-closes.

I do NOT keep food in the hammock. that stuff hangs in a tree or locked up in the truck.

I used to hang my pack from a tree, but have gotten into just leaving it on the ground under my tarp with all the pockets open and a pack cover under it, just in case. Food is always bear bagged on backpacking trips, locked away in the car for car camping trips. As for shoes, they're next to me to get on quick and easy when I get up to water the flowers. If it's raining or other foul weather, I'll put them where they'll stay dry.

I put my pack on a ground cloth. Last month in Big Bend I forgot my normal ground cloth, and put my boots on the dirt. It was the first time I found something in my boot when I woke up... once a little spider invaded, and twice a grub crawled inside!

I hang my smaller dry sacks and water bottles on a tree rope - not food - by my camp.

I usually either put my pack in the hammock with me, clipped on the loop for the RL, or I clip it onto my hammock suspension outside.

Shoes are over the hammock RL at the foot end. Drippy rain gear- same treatment as the pack. Any other loose items are usually in the pack, or if I will be needing something, in the hammock organizer. The only thing left on the ground usually is my crocs, and sometimes my cooking gear if I've only been heating water.
