    Another noob from CA

    Hi.

So, a buddy and I started gearing up several months ago to do some backpacking. I did a fair bit of backpacking in my younger days, then lost touch with buddies and got busy with other activities.

Buddy, detail-oriented dude he is, began researching new gear and sending links to ultra-light gear, hammocks, etc. I was like, yeah, whatever. Good luck with that. I'd rather have gear that will last and stand up to my abuse. Hammock looks cool & all, but my tent is fine for now.

Well, two trips to Big Sur later, watching buddy sleep until late morning as I peer grudgingly at him from the cold, hard ground, having been up since the crack of dawn, remembering why we hiked in so much alcohol in my youth, I decided it was time for a hammock.

Deciding which hammock to buy was a no-brainer. Buddy did all the research and got a WBBB. It sold itself. Accessorizing and using the thing was another story. Watched Shug's videos about 4 times through until I was comfortable with the lingo, decided on a WB Edge tarp and most excellent ridgeline for said tarp from Opie, and we're rarin' to go. I expect things will be along shortly, in time for our next outing.

Nice forum y'all have here. Thanks for all the great info, and a new obsession

Welcome Bearbait ... great place this HF ..

Clicking on Shugs How-to video link in his signature line ... good info, save a man a lot of forum reading to get the basics and make you chuckle at the same time! That was the smart way to go ... bet you loved those didn't ya?

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Thanks again. Yeah, Shug's vids get funnier & more informative every time--the gift that keeps on giving.

Re: UQ & such, can't say I'm up to speed, but I understand some of what I'm about to learn. Already bought a nice Marmot 20* down bag for ground dwelling, so plan to use that & a pad for a while. I do see quilts in my future, though, and a DIY hammock for the dog...
