    Temperature and Hammocks

Using a 25 degree rated synthetic fill sleeping bag and a simple uninsulated hammock how comfortable can you sleep in temperatures below 55 degrees?

Not very comfortable. You'll need some form of insulation under you such as a pad or underquilt. Most need this at temps lower than 65-70 degrees.

    I agree with FF.

It's not that a bag doesn't offer enough insulation. It's that when in a hammock it doesn't offer enough uncompressed insulation. The bag might be fine for 'top' coverage, but you'll almost certainly be cold below.

One simple and popular way to address that problem is to use a ccf pad. Even the cheap blue WallyWorld pads can be suitable when cut down to size. Or, there are a multitude of other pad choices. If, however, you don't like the idea of sleeping on a pad while in a hammock, you can try one of the underquilt options.

Insulation types and the amount needed is different from person to person. You just have to find what works for you. However, don't underestimate the need for bottom insulation in a hammock.

    Welcome to the forum.

Definate bottom insulation required, as FF says.... I'd say for many if not most, those turning in at even 75 will be cool to cold after 30-60 minutes without it...YMMV.... but hey, give it a try in your yard and report out.

I would say it depends on the individual. But most likely will need something for wind.

    Hi
I have been watching this thread with interest and wondered why at 75 degrees which is my 23 Celsius you would be cold? for me 23 is quite warm

The breeze sucks the heat right away from you thru the hammock material. Of course it's largely a personal thing and I usually don't have any problems getting to 70 without insulation under me. I will admit to being quite 'chilled' one night at 68 degrees. Kind of amazing the difference 2 degrees and a change in humidity can make.

75 degrees on the ground would be pleasant but most would still have some sort of top covering, even if it's just a light sheet. In a hammock, even the slightest bit of air movement will rob you of heat from below. You won't need much on the bottom. If you use an underquilt you'll probably leave the "windows" wide open. You just need to reduce airflow slightly. However some may be just fine at 75 with nothing else.

Great thanks, I am still getting my head around this new way of sleeping above ground, I have been using a cheep ccf pad and it seems fine so far. We will be heading into our summer in a few months so I should be ok with that pad.
    Thanks
