    S.G. down comforter ??

As I paged through the Sportsman Guide online catalog, I ran across this comforter.

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=158064

Would the twin size comforter (68x 80) with 32 oz. fill, be usefull/ adequate for our hammocking as an overquilt?

If so, at $29.95 it would be a pretty good deal

It would work well, but I would really stay away from Cotton. Cotton is never a good idea.

The 95/5 ratio means it's 95% feathers and only 5% down. So 32 oz of fill isn't very warm for outside temps. And I'm not sure how much wind it would block since it's cotton - maybe some since it's downproof.

Sounds like it's probably about the same cost/performance as a cheap sleeping bag from Target or Walmart. But if this one doesn't work out, you can always use it at home!

If you sew or know someone who does, you'd be better off with some $1/yd material and a 550-fill down pillow and make a sewn-through quilt for less than the weight of the fill in that one. JMHO.

    Thanks Jeff,

That's the kind of critique I was looking for. Never thought of those things.

By the way, how do feathers and down compare for insullation capabilities??

Carefull....32 oz fill in a cotton quilt of this size mean the quilt total will be 64 oz atleast...."fill" refers to the down portion only.

Also agree with JJ, it is best to stay away from cotton shell material.

I don't have a number for 95/5 ratio, but feathers are much heavier for their insulation value than down. Here's a chart that goes to 60% - roughly 450 fp. Heavy.
