Red face New Hanger from the SF Bay

    Hey all...

I'm a new hanger - I thoroughly enjoyed it last year on a camping trip and now looking to get my own. I'm looking for something simple that I can use when biking/hiking around and want to lay around for a while. However, I am also interested in using this as my camping rig - I truly do not enjoy dealing with poles, air mattresses and the ilk to be comfortable in the woods.

So with that.... SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!! What is a good system that can grow with my needs - and handle the cool nights in Northern California to start.

    Thanks!

Welcome T_B! nice to see a fellow NOR*CAL hanger here on the forums. As to your question, I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific about what you want out of your setup. There are alot of different options for a hanger now.

I'm in Santa Rosa but only venture out camping from Memorial Day to October. Now do you go out past that or up in the Sierra's where it could drop below freezing on some nights? I'll tell you right now, no matter where you go, you want something with a bug net, either as an add on or attached. Also you will need some padding (insulation) underneath your bag to avoid a cold backside in the morning. Be that a pad or quilt, you decide. If you find yourself near the coast that means a tarp also to cope with the dampness of the fog. Or you know as well as I do if your up in the Norther Part of the State, those flash thunderstorms that roll in, stay for an hour or so, and then go on. Either can leave you damp and miserable unless your prepared for it.

Welcome to the forums, there is a lot of information to be gleaned here and most are more than willing to share what they find works for them.

Thanks all ... can't believe how fast the responses are rolling in. Yes, I'm struggling with all of the decisions... Right now I am thinking of a Warbonnet with the 3-season Yeti. And a tarp. Looks comfy and can handle most situations.

Plus if I get really adventurous I can add doors onto the tarp for those serious nights. However I think I'll take it easy to start. Do you know if I can flip the bug netting off if I just want to hang around - open air?

I was hoping I could just get a simple Trek Light type of hammock but I guess that might be good in the park - not over night.

BIG NC Welcome ... take the time to view Shug's 10 part video series ... lots of info on to help you start and a lot of chuckles along the way.

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

There's a sticky thread in the General Discussion forum.

Welcome to the forum. WBBB, Yeti and a tarp is a good choice but take your time and watch the vid's. You'll feel better about the $$ your about to spend.

Another welcome. Your choices should be fine, but there are so many good options you should take your time and make sure thats what you want. Shug's videos are great, then, when you are done laughing, jump in and ask questions.

ok - those videos are great. It only makes the decision so much more difficult. Anyone know what I'm missing out on - if I get WB traveler (apart from the netting) not sure if I REALLY want netting - seems like a hassle. Opinions anyone?
