Quilting Loop Questions

Hi All,

Well I have to confess I have been lurking around here for almost 2 months. In that time I have purchased a HH UB, rigged up ring buckle supports, purchased a used sewing machine (196? Singer 237) and made a few stuff sacks. It's been a fun adventure!

My next big step is gonna be a top quilt, not going the down route but staying with a synthetic.

My question is this:

When I see a "professional" sleeping bag I notice that they do not use the quilting loop method. Took out my sierra designs (15 deg - Polargaurd 3d) bag and noticed that it has rows of stitching horizontally accross the bag. By feeling around I can feel no baffles under the stiching but only the insulation. I can also tell that this stiching does not sew the top/bottom layers of nylon together, it's almost like it stiches nothing.

Not that I won't use the quilting loop method because it looks simple enough. Just to calm my sense of curiosity does anyone have any insight on how this (The "pro" method )works?

I have persued most of the Homemade Discussion Threads concerning sewing/quilting but have not seen this question asked.

good question, but i don't know the answer<g>.
from what you described, i wonder if they sew the shell to the insulation before it's put together???
maybe someone will know more about how they do that.
but adding quilting loops by hand isn't hard, just time consuming. but they work great.

I cut an old bag up to make a quilt and this is how it was done.

Don't forget that you can always take a synthetic bag and transform it into a top quilt. I think Hammock Engineer made a summer quilt this way using a cheapo Sportman's Guide sleeping bag.
