The other day I hung the blackbird between two trees that were about 15 feet apart. Straps were wrapped around trees at 6-7ft high.
After getting in the hammock I noticed the ridgeline still had significant slack. Is this normal?
I thought, according to the video, that slack should be minimal. Mine flops up and down. What could be the issue and/or solution?

you have 2 options...
1. tighten the hammock suspension till the RL is taut
2. leave it slack and lie down. Comfy? then don't worry about it!if no, then see option #1
seriously, height up the tree/distance between trees/height of hammock off the ground all factor in. ANY of these 3 makes a difference in the RL

One of shugs vids showed this and he found an easy solution for this using a piece of cord and an S-biner! It wasn't one of the Newbie vids it was a trip vid that he did with one other person, the title of the vid escapes now!?
30 degree angle up to the tree from the logical straight line running tree to tree and through each end of your hammock gets you the perfect tautness of the RL.
When you are in the hammock and the RL is still "slack", there is more sag in the pitch. To reduce the slack, you'd exit the hammock, shorten the suspension a bit and get back in. If it was a comfortable "lay" to start with, then don't move!!Originally Posted by tboss70
The "rule of thumb" is that you should be able to deflect the RL a bit when you are in the hammock. You want to avoid a "guitar-string tight" RL.
While YMMV, I find having "too much" slack in the RL is far more forgiving and comfortable than having "too little" slack.

If the hammock was at a comfortable height from the ground and you need to snug up the suspension to tighten your ridgeline a little, you will probably need to slide the tree huggers down the trees to get the hammock back to a comfortable height for sitting/lounging.
