totally depends on the quality of the foam, 1/2" eva foam and 1/2" blue foam from walmart would be drastically different.
1/2" of "good" foam would take you well below freezing

It also depends on the pad's design. 1/2" egg crate CCF is only 1/2" thick at the crests...the troughs (where you'd put the eggs) are only about 1/4" thick. So comparing the 1/2" Walmart egg crate pad to a pad that's a full 1/2" thick for the full length will give you drastically different results.
Walmart's new 28" pad is the same way...it's not egg crate, but it still has a design with much thinner areas of CCF in it. These will cause cold spots.
Real camping stores often have full CCF pads, made out of a much warmer foam, than Walmart.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
FWIW, last weekend I used the 1/4 inch EVA pad from JRB under my legs in a WBBB and was comfortable at 27 degrees F. (as long as I had the pad sufficiently placed to keep my feet/heels on the pad).

make sure you check out the Gossamer Gear Wide Thinlite pad. In a pad pocket this is the ultimate UQ at about 4-5 ounces. With my WM Summerlite bag and one Thinlite in my pad pocket I was toasty warm down to 40F.

wider and wider ccf pads years ago banging on trees, snagging on branches years ago ultimately led to the dev. of the underquilts....nowadays thanks to the UQ (Jacks-r-Better) we can use the ccf to supplement the UQ at minimal cost/weight...you'd be surprised at what a 1/4 inch pad can do when used in conjunction with a down underquilt....
-6 to-8 ? Oh my God , you are a warm sleeper.. I bought the different style walmart just started using.. It is more like a segmented styrofoam? 26in. wide.. Probably would
go to mid 30s with it.. with a light sleeping bag.. I'm new to this and so far 39f is the coldest I have experienced so far..
