    TurtleDogs and Windy Confitions

I have always to managed to gind trees when needed but I am attending a Higgland Games this weekend and will be camping in an open field at the site. As such I have decided to build a turtledog stand.

So, how are you all keeping your outdoor TurtleDog Stands from going airborne when they are not occupied? Are there special considerations or adaptations to consider?

You could stake down the legs of the stand; also, leave your gear in the hammock and wrap some cord around it so stuff doesn't fall out. An empty hammock becomes a sail in the wind.

I guess that what I’m wondering is the attachment points to use during staking that ares effective but don’t compromise the integrity of the stand.

I’d considered leaving gear in it, but the added cinching up of the hammock would give less profile for the wind to catch. Thsnks

Use a skin for your hammock when you are not in it. Some are large enough to swallow one, if not both, of your quilts as well. They compress down a lot. However, you can reach an engineering challenge. Too much in the skin and it presents a large surface area to the wind - which you are trying to avoid. T'were it me, once the stand is set up/situated, I'd unclip the hammock and put it away when I'm not in camp. And also anchor the stand. One of those screw-in-the-ground dog keepers, one for each end of the stand, centered between the legs with a shock-cord attached from it to the top of the stand would probably work. If you have bring gallon water plastic water jugs, they might would as the center anchor - depending on wind ferocity.

When I read your post, it brought back memories of Zion National Park where campers would set up their unanchored tents, then go into town for partying and drinking. The wind would come up and those tents would blow all over the camp area like tumbleweeds.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I can’t speak for turtle dogs, but a problem I’ve had in a DIY Tensahedron in high wind is that since the tarp is connected to the same framework as the hammock, every gust would shake me way more vigorously than I cared for. I managed to pitch side-on to the winds (good for keeping rain out, lousy for sleeping), and it was nearly impossible to sleep because of the jerking with gusts. Turtle dogs are more stable than tensahedrons (I think), but I think you’d still be subject to sudden jerks in gusty wind. My solution was to pick up a pair of cheap telescoping tarp poles, so I can rig the tarp completely separately from the hammock.

I have yet to decide about what to do with the tarp as I go topless (!!!) whenever I can. Bring me, I will probably try both and do whichever is easiest. I tend to sleep pretty deeply through most minor calamities with the possible exception of the mid night pee break.

    Thanks for the input folks!
