    stacking top quilts?

I have a camping trip the first weekend of October and want to be ready if temps drop lower than my current gear is designed for. I have two 20 degree bottom quilts I can stack, but not sure if that will work very well with top quilts. I have two JRB 20 degree quilts but I'm unsure if the buggers will stay in place throughout the night.

Any of you fine folks ever stacked top quilts? If yes, how did that work out for you?

    thanks!

    Definitely works! Stack away.

On really cold trips I've had good luck wearing down clothing to bed too.

Good to hear. Did you have much problem with the toppest of the top quilts getting out of place during the night?

It works just fine. Sometimes a bit fiddly getting in and out and they may want to come apart. But once you're in and set ------all good and warm.

You are asking about the TQ's, but I recall a discussion that with a bridge hammock, the TQ might have more comfort influence, while the UQ is more critical in a GE.

Given that it's only October, and your UQ is 20°, perhaps a simple UQP would be enough - especially if your tarp has doors. In other words, beefing up the UQ - without adding a second UQ - might make the 20° TQ good enough. Testing at home before the trip is recommended.

But then again, I see you are in MN. I understand the "Brrrrrrr" level there is different than most areas.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

If you do end up needing to stack those TQs and you're worried about the top one shifting, you could clip the edges together with binder clips. May be overkill. Maybe not...

I attained my personal best low temp sleeping record of 1* F / -17* C by stuffing a 30 degree topquilt inside a 15 degree down sleeping bag. The hooded mummy bag kept everything in place.

It works great. Which two top quilts do you have? If they are the same length, and shape, and were made after 2019 the double-sided Kam Snaps can be used to snape the quilts together.

It may also make a difference whether you’re using a hammock with an integrated bug net. I’ve tossed an extra Costco quilt on top of my TQ in my integrated-net hammocks, and it worked fine. I’d be worried about finding the extra bedding on the ground in a netless, though.

They're both 20 degree sierra snivlers with the snaps, but not sure when I bought them.

    Thanks for the great suggestion.
