AWESOME diagram and just in time (for me to run across this thread). My OES MacCat Deluxe arrived recently and I was experimenting today with how to set it up. THANKS!

So in this method, there's no ridge line going inside the tarp?

I've updated this illustration a few times to show both a full length ridge line and ends only, as is shown in the first iteration on the OP. With a full length line, the line runs through the clip and carabiner and runs above or below the tarp depending on your preference or conditions, and looks like a long figure-8.

I have a few versions of this illustration on Opies website.

my latest setup has dynaglide whoopies for my tarp. using the same system as my hammock. I really like the ease of using the same system for both. 1/2" strap for tarp tree huggers, and a toggle(marlin spike). To undo, just pull the toggle and the tarp comes down.
I use a speer winter tarp. so its big, and lately I have been hanging it as high up as I can get. and using a couple of sticks for porch mode, so I can see out into the forest. Its nice to be able to stand up under my tarp without hunching over.
If the sky is clear, and I am confident of no rain,(most nights in my area) I usually leave my tarp in the pack. That makes it even easier.
Because you fall through the clouds if you try to lay on them, so the next best thing is a hammock.

I like the rope method. How much line should I have for each end? Was using a continuous ridge line but think I am gonna change. You know the drill, think twice cut once.

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about, using a figure 9 to tighten it. My tarp line has a loop in the end - I wrap that line around the tree then feed it back through the loop. Once it's put in place, it doesn't move around relative to the tree when you're tightening your tarp. The line is fixed to the tree and you just tighten it up to the tarp ring, using your trucker's hitch or figure 9 or whatever.

I actually do the exact same thing...works great Mustardman.
