    tarp....Needed?

I have just started using a hammock BPing (Once so far, started with a cheap 20 dollar setup.....my WBBB is in the mail as we speak) and i was wondering about a tarp, i see a ton of you all with tarps, is it really needed? Im in SoCal and prior to hammock enlightenment i would just through my mat on the ground if it wasnt raining?? do i really need the tarp?

I suppose you wouldn't need one if you were sure it wasn't going to rain. I've gone without and got covered in dew, but it's a neat experience sleeping without a covering. Personally, I will always carry one because you can't always depend on the weather man.

I would be willing to ditch everything except for a tarp and a rusty tuna can lid.

Not only could that tarp keep your stuff dry if you got an unexpected CA rain, but it's also good for keeping the sun out of your eyes while you're trying to sleep through the morning
I too will something make and joy in it's making

You can always DIY one, or if CHEAP is the primary requirement, Tyvek works well... It's heavier, but you can always use it (folded up) as a sit pad...

(BTW, It's rare to get an unexpected rain in CA. Heck, it's rare to get rain PERIOD.)

A DWR hammock sock would resolve any dew issues, and save you from light rain...

TARP! We don't need more bailouts! Oh, THAT kind of tarp. This is one type of tarp that I like to see.

I might not set up a tarp very night, but I'd never leave without one.
