Be a good thing if there was some kind of hammock mart that you could test out many varieties of hammocks. Short of that the best way to see multiple set-ups in person is to go to one of the group camp outs that take place regularly.
I have a Hennessy,Speer, homemade hammock. They all work well and each has its own unique features over the other. Check out the hammock manufacturers section on this site.

Agree w/Slowhike about Jeff's site. Sgt Rock's site, www.hikinghq.net, was one place that really helped me decide what to try 1st: HH ULB Asym.

I now use the HH Explorer UL and am happy. I'm 6'1", 175.

I haven't tried a DIY Speer or equivalent yet, but if I had to start all over again I'd try one before buying a hammock of any type. Again, I'm happy w/my HH but DIY is a cheap way to try an alternative.

Let us know what you decide!
