    Question Blackbishop bags??

I know that the bishop bags are merely a stuff sack large enough for the hammock, but with the addition of a button hole or grommet in the normally closed end to allow both ends of the suspension straps or lines to stay out of the bag. My question is: where did the term originally come from? Every time I see the term I form a mental image of a sinister Monk with a hood shrouding his face and evil intent in his countenance!

Could someone please enlighten a newbie to the origin of this interesting term for a rather mundane (but highly useful) bag? Thanks.

AC is right. It was named after it's inventor. BlackBishop was one of the early members of the forum that made a lot of contributions to the forum's DIY ideas.

The BlackCat tarp was his also.

The first place we saw it was the 2006 SEHHA hang. He didn't have a name for it...just put a hole in his stuffsack. There's a pic of the original on this page:

I copied it pretty quickly and named it the Blackbishop Sack...which he thought was pretty funny.

Here's the original HF thread, where Keith asked why his sack was getting so much attention...looks like it was the 159th thread we started here!

Over time people just changed it to Bag, which is probably more appropriate.

Wow, thanks for all the quick and extensive responses! I'm really glad I finally asked, I've been wondering this since I started this wonderful affliction. Also Knotty, thanks for suggesting a better mental image, though since I am one of "THOSE" Catholic type people, it is going to be hard for me to change.

Ideally, I should eventually get to just picturing a modded up stuff sack, but first impressions take a long time to change for an old fart! I'm well into the Mad Cow stage of life! Looks like great reading, I'm going to peruse it tonight.

-you find yourself slowing down as you pass trash cans to check for supplies for projects

-you have atleast one huge desk or table covered in "junk" and tools that could quickly render a stove, gravity filter, stuff sack... practically a whole new backpacking kit
