If I'm alone I hike until I'm ready to eat and go to bed. If the kids come along, sometimes I'll teach them some bushcraft...usually firemaking. I'm thinking now that I'm gonna do less hiking and more bushcraft, but we'll see.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
I enjoy trying to identify plants as I hike.
Some of my freight hopping adventures on film over at my YouTube Channel... Oh and there is other stuff there as well!
I also try to identify plants, particularly the edible ones. I attempt to identify tracks and extend the tracking to the next visible track or sign as long as I can. Occasionally, I build the framework of a secluded debris shelter further on the trail than I usually hike , so that I can extend my trip for a day or two the next time I'm out without carrying a shelter.

This practice should answer the question... Lao Tzu
up here in the northeast, i like hiking ridges and then finding two trees right on the edge so i can look out over the cities or the moutains...
also and to be completely honest.. i love to eat in the outdoors. anything really, from campbells chunky chilis to sausage and cheese or foil dinners on a campfire if theres a site with a ring or even soggy sandwiches from home... oh and i love when people ask me questions about my hammock... i'm always willing to go out there and share the love and convert people.
I like to work on my ability to sense movement most of all. Working on "non-centered vision". Ever notice how if you don't focus on anything you can see the slightest movement, but if you focus on something you miss everything else? I like being able to id movement instantly. I also like to really listen to sound when i hike, not an ipod btw.
My wife doesn't understand how I can pick out animals so quickly in the woods. I tell her, just scan all the time, and most things will be in your peripheral...she's just too citified to get it! I still wonder how many things I'm missing...I know I miss more than I see.

If I'm alone I'll just hike and try to get some nice pictures, with others the hikes are usually shorter and one of my favorite places (pisgah/wilson creek, nc) has some nice deep pools for spearing fish. Fry them up on a rock over a fire you started with a bow drill and you will always be invited to tag along. I'm a sucker for free diving and speerfishing mountain lakes too, they are just a little to far from home though

I like to use topo maps to locate possible places to hunt (small game) then hike and check out the local vegitation for criiter forage to locates good hunting area for in the fall + I just like being out in the woods, it's like a pressure relief.
I like to always know where I am on the topo. Even on well-traveled trails when I don't need a map, I still pull it out on breaks and match my location to the terrain and landmarks. I've hiked a few times w/o topos - like for short trips into a campsite on a well-traveled and marked trail - but I still get a sorta uneasy feeling just being out there w/o a topo! Habit, I guess.
