1L wide mouth Aquafina. Free (basically) and weigh .8oz
last about 10 trips, then replace. they are thin enough to fit in any of my packs.
Aquafina also comes in 1.5L, but with a narrow (28mm) mouth. if only...

If you like to use a hydration bladder - regardless of brand - and you filter - you can get a quick connect that attaches to the bite valve and the other end goes on the output hose of your filter, so you are basically backfilling the bladder thru the hose. Camelbak, katadyn and platypus all make them...

When hopping train, or hiking I often just have 1L platypus bottles and a 2L one as well. They have held up to 3 year of heavy use and I have even fallen on my pack with them in it with no holes.

    I would recommend them.

Me too. I also carry a 4L platy that I use at the camp site. I started out with Camelbak, but for many reasons switched to the bottles.

most of the time I'm hiking with scouts... for the scouts, especially the young ones, I don't let them use the camelbak or anything that stays hidden inside their packs. I have to be able to "see" how much they are drinking and even when you say, stop, drink now, they don't!!! My last trip I had one scout that bulled through the whole day without drinking water and sure enough that evening, he was throwing up. Started asking him questions and pretty soon discovered that he was dehydrated.

For me, I like to carry an aluminum 32 oz bottle (pink of course!) and a foldable 48oz wide mouth nalgene. I'll also carry a 96 oz foldable empty to use at the campsite to get water. I usually only have to fill that one once in the evening, treat it and still have water for the morning so that I don't have to do the whole getting-treating more water. That 96 oz bottle will get left at home if I think I've got to much to carry in my pack.

For the scouts, I try to steer them to buy the large 1L Aquafina water bottles. Cheap and light wieght.

A Gatorade for drinkin' while hiking and a larger AquaFina for extra. On a longer trip with dodgy water sources I tote along a quart collapsable Nalgene too.

I have a 1 liter Platypus bottle, but I like the Gatorade bottle better because it holds it's shape and works better one handed where the Platy wants to flop around.

I tried to like bladders, but they work better for me when I'm on my bicycle.

I do just the same ... but I use a Powerade bottle instead. I have also carried a 2-liter platy that's a bladder with a tube just like the Camelbak. I like the Platy more ... taste cleaner. I use the Camelbak on the bike only.

I carry a 3L Zip top Platy bladder with bitevalve hose. Rarely is it ever full but I love it.

Also carry a Gatorade bottle. Easier to fill from sources.
