    Prusik Suspension?

This has probably been done before so I'm keen to tap the mountains of knowledge in HF.

I'm thinking loop from hammock whipping tied in prusik (or similar) around single suspension line up to marlin spike.

To me this sounds as simple as whoopie slings but lighter as the line doesn't have to go out and back?

If slipping is a problem maybe a slippery half hitch behind the prusik once adjusted.

Thank you in advance hammock gurus.

It was spoken of recently ,the more knowlegable suspension doctors where I believe staying with the whoopie but I take your point on the additional rope return though I must say not a big problem and if you get the right rope amsteel etc even 5mm paracord the whoopie is not heavy or bulky.I guess you could keep experimenting .Keep your hammock low until you are sure it's strong enough.

I did that with success but one time it slipped with 3 wraps on teh prussik. I was using the heavy sispension line of the explorer with teh thick spectra. All in all I think the whoopie is better and more reliable. It does work though.

I'm not so sure a prussik is a wise move for suspension. I think it could work, but I fear that to get a good enough grab with the prussik, the line "clinch" would be so tight that moving it could be a real bother, if not impossible (at times). People have already had some trouble moving the prussiks on their tarp lines, and those don't see near the stress of a suspension.

That said... I agree with clearbluesky - try it, just keep your hammock low! Maybe start with a solid 4 wraps.

I tried Penberthy knots on my tarp tie-outs and liked them so much that I've just rigged a 7/64" amsteel main/ridge line with 4 Penberthy knots - two out of Dynaglide for the hammock and two out of 500 lb. spectra kite line for the tarp. Will try it and post pictures if it works. This eliminates carabiners and cuts several ounces from my suspension. (The tarp tie-outs are dynaglide; I'm tempted to try using that instead of amsteel for the main/ridge line to save even more weight.)

The cords dangling are, left to right, gray 7/64" amsteel end of whoopie sling on main line, white 500 lb. test spectra kite line for tarp, and orange dynaglide for hammock. Ignore the out of focus darker cable in the background; it is 1/2" steel for moving logs.

Here are the tarp and hammock cords in use.

WV, don't you experience any/some amount of deflection in your main line when your weight is added to the hammock? Seems to me your tarp would sag when the hammock was occupied?

Boy, you've got sharp eyes! That was a hasty setup to show the Penberthy knots. I normally have a short loop of 3/16" bungee cord at my tarp ridge tie-out, but I removed it to give a less complicated picture (and because I had made my main line whoopies a bit too close together). Before I tried the Penberthy knots, I used a separate adjustable structural ridgeline that was attached to the same carabiner as the tarp bungee and the hammock rope, so the problem you mentioned didn't happen. You can see that setup in bhancock's picture from SEHHA.

I'm redoing the whoopies and shortening the white tarp cord, which will connect to the tarp bungee. I expect that I will need to keep the orange hammock Penberthy quite close to the white tarp Penberthy, but I hope that the stretch of the bungees will compensate and prevent tarp sag. Will try it today and post pics.
