Thread: Support Systems

    Support Systems

I have been reading about some of the various ring and buckle support methods. I currently use the Figure 8 knot on my HH. I was wondering about the options that are available without cutting the spectra.
(also hoping i have used all the right terms)

someone ought to write a guide...

someone ought to write a "Users' Guide to Hammock Suspension Systems" that covers the various approaches discussed here. Going through the Ring Buckles thread is almost as daunting as taking on the Bridge Hammock thread.

not volunteering at the moment, although maybe in a month it would be possible...

I think Just Jeff has some material up on his site (?) I just did a quick scan but didn't see it.

Nightcrawler, in the Ring buckle thread, Miu did the same thing you may want to do. Miu's post/picture is here.

I'm busy through early next week, but if nobody does it before then, I'll write it up.

I had tried to start a thread that kinda did this. then was going to put it in a place that all could find easily. Guess it did not catch on.

It would be best to get it all in order in an article. Easier to link new members to and won't include superfluous comments. JMO.

    In an article.

Sorry I was not clear. Thank you for taking on the article. Can't wait to see it. I do hope you include pics from tree to hammock. Much easier to compare. IMHO

    ring system supplies

    Nightcrawler,

I met you several weeks ago in Mojo’s and MRO in Damascus.

After using my HH for 8 days, I came back here and read the entire ring thread. Here is what I then did.

Bought 4 descending rings from REI $2.50 each(Just looked at the REI site and they don’t seem to have them at the moment but they are available here:
    http://www.cliffgear.com/details/cli...2256/2259/?p=1

Bought 2 carabineers from REI. $7 each See:

    http://www.rei.com/product/736487
Since I got both from REI, I had one shipping charge.

Bought 30’ polyester strapping from strapworks.com. $0.30 per foot

    http://www.strapworks.com/Polyester_Webbing_p/pew1.htm

Shipping was cheap as they rolled it small and used US mail.

I sewed loops with polyester thread but later found that strapworks will sew this loop for several dollars. Worth it my opinion. I plan on trimming back the 15’ per side once I use it more and determine the length I want. Many use 10’ per side.

I attached the spectra cord to the rings using an anchor hitch. I did not cut the cord. I wanted to see how I like this setup. After a few hangs, I am now ready to cut the spectra cord as the ring system is truly superior.

This system makes it so much easier to use. Be sure to tie the extra half hitch in the strap as described in the thread to prevent falling.

Give the buckles a shot too. I got one set a week or two back and I really like them. I'll probably replace all my ring set-ups with them...and I didn't think I'd like them.
