    calendar

Trying to get my material list togeather to make a couple of hammocks. I'm new at this so I'll have a few questions. I went to Hot Springs to have a look see. Looked at Ed's hammock and he showed me the calendared material. Some places don't list this feature. Heck one local place in Asheville the old ladies in the store didn't even know what ripstop was. Is it even that necessary to be calendard ?How would one determine this over the phone with people who won't know what it is ? If its listed as downproof would that indicate as being calendard ? What weight ripstop is commonly found in retail stores ? They seem to never be marked so how dose one tell the weight while still in the store?

IMO Fabric only needs to be calendered if you are looking for downproof fabric. Other than that I can't see what difference it would make. If I was going to spend the coin to make a down project I would buy the fabric from one of our local folks on the forum. I ain't spending that kind of money on fluffy fill just to put it in cheap fabric. The guys around here know what they are selling and can be trusted to steer you right.

Sorry for misleading. Wasn't concerned about making anything with down. Ed explained it as improving its wind resistance.

Camo limits the number of choices that are available. I have not been able to find a source for camo fabrics consistently that are clandered. Camo tends to be a take what you can get sort of thing right now in light weight fabrics.

Boy, I misunderstood this thread title. With all the folks in the buffs, lists of innovations of the year, and DIY show and tell, I thought I was going to see that a Hammock Forums Calendar was being printed.

There would be some validity to that claim. But whether it is statistically significant I don't know. Not to dis on Ed Speer at all but for me that would not be a big selling point. The Speer products are excellent quality and they know what they are talking about.

Ed nailed it - calendared fabric has much better wind resistance. This makes it ideal for quilts, either down (to keep in the down) or synthetic - as wind blowing through a quilt will rob the heat stored much faster. It's not necessary, but helpful.

Like Paul, I have a hard time finding a good source for calendared camo fabrics. I've got some Olive Green Calendared in my store that has been used successfully for down and synthetic quilts, hammocks, etc.

Ed's got a better variety though, definitely take a look through his supplies section. He's been doing this for a real long time and knows his stuff.

Calendaring is a process where fabric is run through hot rollers. Think of how a lighter seals the end of certain ropes - it's the same idea, but on a much less destructive scale.

pgibson. Thats why I'm asking. Being new to this can be a daunting task trying to figure things out the first time around. I found some interesting ABU camo at $3.95 yd. Says its a new tiger stripe adopted by the USAF but its listed just as 1.9 ripstop. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the best material for a hammock body would be calendared and or DWR coated for wind resistance but breathability .
