I have a 3/16" quick link that weighs about 17g and has a working load limit of 660lbs. I bought it at lowes or home depot I believe.
I was going to try it out today but forgot about it.
It's about 2" long and 1"wide.

BUT, you suggestion on making my own hook type thing is excellent!
I attached a quick idea but it doesn't look like it would hold.

wow. i would have thought those steel quick links would be heavier.

yeah, i was thinking more along the lines of a biner without a gate. like the letter C or the #6 or a fish hook shape.

Well I could just use the quick link without linking it and it would be a C

But I know that would bring the rating way down.
I know there were smaller quicklinks at the store but this had a decent load limit and felt lightish.
I'll try to remember to test it tomorrow.

remember what rapt said about safe working loads generally being 1/3 to 1/5 of the actual min. breaking strength.

600# working load could mean 3000# break strength. seems like with biners, the open gate strength is generally about 1/3 of the closed gate break strength

I took my large 9s to work to see if I could break one. I filed down the teeth so it would not be abrasive to my rope. I used 4mm nylon rope from REI with a 900 pound limit. I lifted 330 pounds no problem. Kept it suspended for an hour. Than I lifted 520 for 1/2 an hour. Then 730 pounds for an hour. And finally I lifted 920 pounds for a half an hour. At 920 pounds the rope started to tear on the outer casing but no big deal. I know they only have 150 pounds as a weight limit but these things are way over engineered. At 30 grams it better hold a person. However you could cut at least 10 grams off, but I think I can make something lighter.

By the way the last couple prototypes look awsome and very professional. And no turk I can't break one for you. The hoist I'm using only goes up to 2 ton.

put my mind at ease. I have done some dangerous hangs, and the very
last thing I want is personal risk due to my suspension system. If the
regular 9's are that strong, what I think I will do is take my last model
Figure-T's and scale them down to less than 1/2 the size.

And yes, WBG... the current ones could probably hoist my truck

I know it was overkill.... but I was paranoid. Now I will feel better
making little ones.

thanks for doing the testing. I picked up some big 9's a while ago and now have a much better idea of where their limits aren't. Thought turk's insight to thread webbing through them was cool, and filed that away for future reference. Probably I'll file down the teeth before I file away the idea...

that puts my mind at ease too, thanks! now, if it can hold longer then 900 lb rope, it better be able to support a loaded hammock. someone calculated roughly 1200 lb weight limit for the larges.

Dutch, this is great!
You accomplished two things. First that the nine can hold a lot of weight.
Second, the WBG hitch is also satisfactory. I also noticed there wasn't a half hitch in there. Is that true?
