The setup that I am using now has a short length of webbing with loops sewn in both ends at each end of the hammock. One of the webbing has just a biner the other end has my "dog bone plate" and at each end of the hammock i have 3mm dynemer cord attached with a larkshead.
    Setup is as follows

Wrap webbing around tree, clip both ends together with biner.

Take a guess at how much cord you need between hammock and the first tree.

Tie cord to biner with clove hitch and half hitch back up.

Unroll hammock from BB style stuff sack and feed through dog bone and pull tight, tie off temporary.

Check that the hammock is in the centre of the trees and retie dog bone properly.

This way I have done away with 12" of webbing at each end, I now have almost no stretch and I only have to worry about adjusting one end of the hammock. I have saved on about 150-200 gms of weight but the biggest saving is on the pack size, everything now packs up very small indeed.

yep. While the devices developed on this thread are cool, one achieve these weight and size savings using different methods to secure the rope to the biner The big payoff is in replacing webbing with rope.

I made horseshoe shaped buckle thingy
I sewed the owf 1" webbing to one side and then 'clipped' the other end onto the hammock side of the webbing.
It snugs up nice and tight against the tree and doesn't budge.
I have full confidence in the strength of the 3/16 aluminum.
It held my weight fine with some bouncing.
I also tested if it would stay put after getting in and out a few times.
This is where it 'might' need some improvement.
It pretty much stayed where it was, but I'd like a little more insurance.
Basically, I could see the webbing possibly coming out of the bottom.
To fix that would be done by making the 'hook' stick out just a little more.
The horseshoe WITH the hugger weighs around 30-32g.
Just a suggestion - to kepp it from "coming out of the bottom" - flip it over so that the slot is on the top instead of the bottom.

Yep - after looking at that comparison of rope and webbing on that link you gave me - I decided to stick with rope and forego the webbing.

I tried that too and I 'think' it might be suspectible to a similar popping out. I don't think either way is much of a problem but I wouldn't say it's fool proof.

by far the coolest thing to do would be to install a wire gate on it. if you've ever looked at a wire gate, it doesn't look like it's that complicated(alot less complicated than a regular gate). probably harder than making the device itself, but possibly doable. it might have to be a little different due to the shape of your device, or the shape might have to be changed to facilitate one, but it would solve the problem and difinately be bad a$$.

I was thinking of either a hook or a slide that is attatched by drilling an tapping the horseshoe. It doesn't have to suppot you, just keep webbin from falling out. I also think that the slot could be made just the right size that it couldn't slip out, but it may open wider as time goes by.

    Hi
Why not try this idea for your horse shoe, might be harder to cut but I think it would work ok.

that's a good idea. it reminds me of the public bathrooms with no doors at the entrance. like the ones at the airport. you could call it the bathroom buckle.

    good call gunn.
I would want to make it a bit 'tighter though.
    Perhaps like the attached piece.
I could actually make that one without not too much difficulty.
