I do that all the time too Lori. Like you said,it is not quite as smooth to adjust but I ALWAYS have a lot extra on my 6' whoopie slings.

I use 7.5' huggers (half of a 15' ratchet strap) and have found them to be sufficient on about 90% of my hangs. I also carry a length of mule tape (1/2" webbing, usually used in nurseries to tie up trees) to extend things if I need to.

I had 6' straps and to my embarassment, the only trees I can hang from in my yard were too big!!! I made longer straps, not sure how long off the top of my head. Ended up using the old straps to make "football" belts for the boys and me.
I use one 6' tree strap and one 8' tree strap with 6' (or so) Whoopie Slings. The 8' is intended for bigger trees. If that's not big enough, I "extend" it with an Amsteel loop (as big as needed).
