    Noobie Question

    Hey, All,

I posted this in the HH tutorial posting, but no response, so I'm tying a new posting.

I'm new to HF, having started hanging about three years ago. All of my hammock time is either during solo bicycle tours or camping with my grandson on cub scout outings. I have a HHBA.

I have a lot of experience with sewing, so after reading all the great posts here I will attempt to make a HHBA clone.

My first question is regarding how the HH ends are joined together. In removing the fabric cover I see that there appears a part made of plastic thru which the cords are wrapped.

Please help me understand why this method is not replicated vs. the bunched-up style. Also, any one know what that plastic thingy is in the HH at the end of hammock?

Great site, I'm enjoying the readings very much.

    Thanks for your help.

    Bob

I have the expedition ... and the ends of it are folded and compacted ... and they obviously burnt the two holes through the fabric ... and burnt the ends to seal it making a compact end to tie off to. I have no plastic parts short of the wire tie that was used to secure the little cover to the end.

Any chance you could post some photos related to the part you are describing?

    burnt ends..

    Michael,

I looked at the hammock, thinking as you suggested. I can see that possibility. I think you're right. Thanks.

Any idea why this style is not duplicated vs. the bunched end style? Maybe the bunched style offers benefits the other doesn't?

I too have a HHBA and Exped. The plastic part that you see is actually the melted nylon, when they burnt the two holes into the material. As Hawk-eye mentioned they also burnt/ melted the end of the material too.

If you want to pusue this method there is a thread here that shows how someone made a jig to burn the holes in the material. I don't recall who it was at the moment.

Headchange4u has a great how to on a HH DIY clone of the exped. you can mod it to your own specs.

They all are gathered end hammocks, the only difference is how it's done! Tom the maker/inventor of HH has a patent on his design which is why it's not copied! Also the whipped end hammocks are easier to do than the HH end! The difference between hammocks are the features that are offered with them. Ie.. a WBBB has the footbox, shelf, and other comfort feature's, not taking away anything from HH as I have two, just different strokes for different folks!

There are some pics showing the gathering pattern of the HH but it looks to me like a whole lot of bother for not much benefit. I've used both a whipped end and a channel gathered end. If the hammock is long enough.. I don't see much of a difference. YMMV
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
