    Not sure what your real expectations are for a smaller backpack... I can fit the Blackbird, MacCat Deluxe, two full length JRB 3 season underquilts and the rest of my gear in a Gossamer Gear Mariposa Plus, without getting up into the extension, with a total weight of around 25 lbs with 3 days food in a bear canister. I have two liters in a hydration bladder, usually. I carry a few extra clothing items and a fishing pole, too.

    I don't believe the JRB's mentioned are differential cut quilts, so one might easily sub for a top quilt.

    I often use the MWUQ4 (differential cut) as a top quilt. Differential TQs conform to your body better than flat ones...just like they do on bottom!

    But a more common setup is the Nest on bottom and the NS on top. Iin winter, both on bottom and a thicker bag/quilt on top.
