I find the best surface to use for cutting fabric with a soldering iron is a sheet of glass, but for long edges it's easier to use a piece of Formica or Masonite. Don't use your kitchen counter.

head down to the cabinet/millwork shop and see if they have any long thin scraps?

(ps- come to think about it, a strip of crown molding will also have nice channels to keep the hot tip in line...)
The concrete garage floor works pretty well too! (I use the third stall, where there's no car parked, so I don't have to worry about oil stains!)
