The other day I was thinking about DL hammocks.
I've made one and like the benefits of a second layer.
That's when I was wondering exactly what are the benefits of a DL hammock.
I know that you can slide a pad between the layers and have it stay put. The second layer also offers more weather resistance than a single layer.
That being said, are there any other benefits?

I agree, but can they bite through say a 1.9 versus a 1.1? I'm too heavy for a single 1.1, but a 1.7 or higher would hold my 200 pounds.

Skeeter biting has to do with the weave. Some weave is too tight for them to bite through, but most of the normal 1.1 or 1.9 aren't. When there are two layers, though, it's harder for the skeeters to get lined up between the threads to bite through both layers...hence the better resistance of a DL. At least I read that somewhere, and it makes sense. I don't think anyone has done a scientific test of it.

Interesting. I usually treat my single layer ripstop hammocks with permethrin on the hammock body and even on the bugnet as most of the time I'd have a few sneak in before I sealed up.
I started this thread to compliment the other thread I opened on substituting a few lines of shock cord for the second layer of a hammock under the "pads" sub forum.
If you don't mind chemicals, permethrin should work on 1.1 or 1.9, and for lighter weight than a DL...unless you like all the other benefits of the DL.

Permethrin is my buddy! It keeps the ants and ticks from marching down my straps as well.
