Video : GrizzBridge Unleashed! Parts 2 and 3

Parts 2 and 3 are up.

The Part 2 tour has two stops. The first is on how to use a monopole hiking staff as a spreader bar. The particular staff shown is a Leki Sierra Antishock pole with Camera mount

In the giving-credit-where-credit-is-due department, I must hasten to add ideas about using a hiking staff were posted by TeeDee in the summer of 2007 when the DIY bridge thing took off. His is the idea of using a monopole. His is the idea of strengthening it with dowel rods. Thank him for identifying wire-nuts as good caps for the the tip. I might have added the washer, but you get the idea...

The second stop on the Part 2 tour visits a down DIY differentially cut 2/3 length underquilt I've made for my bridge hammocks. The novelty, such as it is, is using 0.33 oz/sq yd Cuben fiber for the hammock side body and the baffles. The hammock suspension shown in Part 1 offers a neat little trick for suspending the UQ. The gap between two cords up by the shackle loop are just right for passing a loop of shock cord through, and then run a short trail stick through that loop to secure it.

Part 3 documents the result of my work to use the PacerPole as a spreader bar. Until schrochem found that questoutfitter's poles worked (sometime in 2007 or 2008), my hiking pole seemed the only viable option. I do love my PacerPoles, and wasn't wanting to give them up just so that I could have a trail-ready pole for a bridge hammock. The recipient of this hammock (hi Andy!) has caught the PacerPole bug from me, through Mule. So as much as anything this video is his instruction manual.

The last part of Part three gives a run-down on weights:
    hammock body : 8.25 oz
    bugnet : 1.65 oz
    suspension line : < 2 oz
    tree huggers : 2 oz

    < 14 oz
excluding the spreader bars, but excluding only the spreader bars

Great series of bridge videos, Grizz! Thank you!

The jury is still out for me. I tried to sleep in the backyard in mine the other night, but a huge lightning storm rolled in and I retreated to the house. I'll be giving it another trial soon.

    Nice videos.

But I need to get all my current gear working for me before I dabble in bridge hammocks, haha. It keeps snowing just as it seems like things are going to get nice and stay nice.

    More great videos Grizz!

Really makes me want to pull out the bridge hammock shell that ExPXGUY made based on your article and see if I can get a suspension put together for it.

Just watched all three installments Grizz. Clever and elegant solutions in a light weight and amazing package. Thank you for sharing your ideas!

    Now for the questions!
Is there a benefit of wrapping the shockcord around the hammock body vs making permanent attachment points on the endcap and suspension curve via toggle/snap/soft shackle?

Are you using two different parabolic curves for the tapered end or one curve angled from point to point?

How did you attach your momentum to the cuben baffles? Have you attempted a karo step baffle quilt yet?

Why did you choose to toggle the foot end UQ suspension instead of having a continuous loop on both sides?

Thanks opie. My wife's family actually did pioneer out here in Illinois, owned most of what is now Evanston. Sold it at a loss I'm afraid...

suggest a head lamp. No, I suggest you practice threading the pole blindfolded, a lot! Be able to form that webbing loop by touch…then you'll have it...

go with it! Lots more stuff to tinker with. And, I know from experience, if you're a linux guy you HAVE to love to tinker...

Appreciate that Cranky Bear. Anticipation makes the heart grow fonder.

Two advantages. One is less weight (not a big one) and less complexity (more of a big one). The real reason though is getting the netting pulled flat up against the side of the hammock. The elastic band does that. Attachments on the sides don't, except in the limit where the attachment on the side is a zipper.

Are you using two different parabolic curves for the tapered end or one curve angled from point to point?
The "x-axis" for the suspension curve is the straight line between hammock corners. I think that's the latter of the answers you suggested.

How did you attach your momentum to the cuben baffles?
    sewn.

Have you attempted a karo step baffle quilt yet?
That's my next one. Top layer, bottom layer, baffles,
and two sides of cuben. Something breathable at the other sides.
It will be a while before I get to it though. Probably fall.

Why did you choose to toggle the foot end UQ suspension instead of having a continuous loop on both sides?
Geometry. While I can hang it with two continuous loops, it is hard to have the quilt sort of half attached when I'm not in it. With two separate ends I disconnect (taking the tension off), bring the ends down a bit and loosely tie together and the quilt just hangs there. With a continuous loop at the foot, what do I do to keep the hammock off the ground but still attached at the head….

    thanks for the interest
