    Rings Setup

    Members,
After reading this list for several weeks, I took the plunge and bought a hammock (Claytor - Jungle). It arrived 3 days ago. I read all the posts (LOTS!) on rings and bought needed supplies yesterday. Assembled and hung for the very first time today. Seemed pretty solid. Sort of felt like I knew what I was doing after being on here and taking your expertise.

When I hung it, I used two different methods/techniques. One one end I used the S____ rope; ran it through the end of the Claytor and tied off. Photo 1 if it uploads.

On the other end I used the Larks Head method talked about and tied it to the Claytor webbing that came with the hammock. Photo 2 - I hope.

It was pretty neat lying in it this morning here in Napa Valley. My question for you is ... Does one end look (in terms of function) better than the other? I didn't buy enough of the S___ rope and had to use what I had, but it looks like it might put too much pressure on the hammock end. Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Will take it out again tomorrow (labor day) and hang some more. Still have not worked on fly yet and don't quite know what is meant by "ridgeline", but will continue to read here.

    Thanks,
    Joseph

Photo 1 looks great. That's how I do it with rings. I suggest doing both sides that way.

    Welcome triker,
In your picture it looks like you tied a slip knot in your webbing for security. But it looks like you just tied it into the loose end of the webbing only. That could possibly get tight and be difficult to undo. Try tieing a slip knot by wrapping the loose end over the webbing going to the tree and right up against the rings. It'll be a lot easier to undo.

I agree with #1 as well. I made my ring supports with about 12" of webbing between hammock and rings. I just couldn't get my hammock to hang exactly the way I wanted so I cut the webbing and just added the rings straight to the haamock.

    Thanks

Thanks everyone for taking the time to answer. As suggested, I went with #1 at both ends today. Worked great. Another lesson learned today - hang the head end too high on the tree and you slip to the bottom of your hammock. Well, I did read somewhere on here that the head should be higher than your feet. I guess not THAT much higher

    Stoikurt - Followed your advice.

Slowhike - Born and raised in Asheville and graduated from Brevard High School.

FanaticFringer - Thanks for the ridgeline link. Like lots of things on here, there seems to be many thoughts. Some feel they are not needed on a Claytor, others want to poke a hole in the bugnet to use one, etc. I don't know anything yet about "hanging," but I know enough about me that I'm not about to put hole in my bugnet. May just leave the idea alone for now and just get used to using it "as is." The other thing I didn't see anything about was the size of rope used for ridgelines.

Thanks again all of you. I think I'm going to enjoy this method of sleeping. Almost decided to "hang" tonight, but work comes early.
