    Easy to find suspension?

Ok folks, step one is complete, I successfully sewed my first hammock. I also made a set of 4' tree huggers. Now I need to finish out the suspension. I intend to purchase a pair of of Dutch clips once the HF Store opens back up, and a pair of Whoopie Slings eventually.

However, I want to hang this sucker NOW and give it a test run in the back jungle. So to my question... what rope/cord do y'all recommend I use for a temporary suspension? I need something that I can get local. I was thinking accessory cord at my local climbing outfitter but I wasn't sure what exactly size to ask for. For the record, I weigh about 220#.

    What say ye?

    Ski rope.

It's cheap, hollow braided, easy to splice, and will make a perfectly adequate set of whoopies. For five bucks, you can learn the ropes, and be hangin' with the bats this time tomorrow night.

For cord, you're better off going with something that's NOT nylon. Spectra, dyneema, etc will all work well. The point is to have something that won't stretch much, and nylon cord stretches like crazy. Nylon webbing, which is the most common type used by climbers, probably stretches even worse.

Try 3/8" braided polyester. It has minimal stretch for a cheap rope that you can find at your local hardware store.

What manner of retail establishment sells spectra, dyneema, etc.? I have not found that at the climbing store or the outdoor store.

Midway, if your just looking for something "temporary" as stated in your question, any hollow-braid, polyester rope will work, 5/16ths or bigger.
Available in most hardware and chain stores. Similar to the ski rope old gringo suggested.
I know all the big chain stores carry it, usually in the boating dept, walmart and kmart have it on the shelf.
    Avoid nylon rope, too stretchy.
Cheap, re-useable, and you can make whoopie slings with it!
    Go out and hang!
Order up some of the good amsteel or dyneema from Paul or Opie, they get it shipped out Monday to you, and you'll have by next weekend.
But for now the hollow-braid poly will get you swinging, enjoy the ride!!!

Gargoyle and OG have given you pretty sound advise!!! The only other thing you could use would be ratchet straps from Walmart or the like that would be cheap and quick!

    Thumbs down

I used accessoryu cord for my first tarp and it was way too stretchy, the hamock would settle about two feet when I got in.

I see West Marine sells the Amsteel stuff. Will 3/16"th do? Its rated to 5600 lbs I think.

Yes, but it's overkill...1/8" is adequate, and some go smaller, yet.
