Sailor aboard and enjoying the oldest commissioned floating hang.
Sailor aboard and enjoying the oldest commissioned floating hang.
My grandfather served in the Navy during WWII and after. He always swore that the hammocks were a very comfortable way to sleep.
like it alot whish i had a hammock lik that
I toured the USS North Carolina battleship once, They have places to hang, but replaced most with fold down bunk beds. Any Navy boys here that can explain why on earth they replaced hammocks??? Seems like a dumb typical government idea when hammocks take up less space and are lighter! (not to mention more comfortable!)
Could have something to do with the hammocks shown - not very wide, so getting diagonal is going to be a problem. The hammock are strung pretty close together which is also going to make laying on the diagonal harder.
All in all, if you like the banana shape, then maybe a hammock aboard ship as pictured wouldn't be bad. My knees couldn't take it.
Those who sacrifice freedom for safety, have neither.
Do not dig your grave with your teeth. (Unknown)
Is that special access or can anyone test the hammocks?
The period uniformed third class leading the tour failed to properly account for all of the US Navy's guests, and son and I were momentarily left to our own devices. Hopped a line and took each other's pictures, as it was meet and right so to do.
Plans are for her to sail under her own power for the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
I just called ex #2 (WW2 Navy vet) and asked if he ever slept in hammocks.
He said they were issued a hammock as part of their kit. They had to get up really early and remove the hammocks, cos that's where they set up the tables for chow.
He also said they were very high up and he had to grab onto some metal thing and hope his *** would make it to the hammock! This was on the Gwinn (Destroyer). A few months later he was on the Longshaw.
aside: they sailed 50-60' behind the aircraft carrier. if a pilot went into the water, they rescued. Bill physically jumped into the water and swam out to rescue the pilot(s). when they returned them to the carrier they would get 50 gallons of ice cream as a "thank you" gift.
ummmm....to get back on topic: he said that he was only in the hammock for a short time. they "modernized" and went to bunks.
I'm going to get him to try my Switchback one day.
