CWH (Cohutta Wilderness Hang) GA, July 16-19 2010

In rejection of the "State Park Style" hangs I see popping up, which are riddled with restriction, I'm hoping some of you tree monkeys in the SE might be interested in a "less restricted", non-recreation area hang in one of the best Wilderness areas of the SE; Cohutta.

It'll be my birthday on the 15th, so it seems like a great time to setup a hang in one of my favorite areas, that happens to be one of the most hospitable to hammocks, and least friendly to tents.

Starting out near the southern access of the Conasauga River Trail seems logical for convenience sake, but the less trodden trails (all others besides Jack's River and Conasauga) are ideal for hammocks, due to lack of tent sites.

Lots of easy loops, a few nice difficult trails with views, at least two good waterfalls, lots and lots of water and wet paths.

This is probably more suitable for people that enjoy hiking and getting wet (lots of river crossings).

BYOB and friendly open minded people only. I'll haul extra booze, and good vibes.

I love the Cohutta. I can't say this far out whether I can make it, but it is definitely a possibility. I'll keep watching this thread for updates.

Too far out for me to commit, but definately interested!

I did the Conasauga last June and July and did find a great area to hang a small group if there's ant interest in that area. (Conasauga River Trail = 16 miles/34 + crossings!)

Yeah there are a few great spots near the southern end of the CR Trail, and there's a really beautiful "oasis" at the top of Panther Creek trail that could house alot of hammocks.

Certainly no lack of water.

You can't see, but it's a long way down.

My favorite place!! I am on that trail several times a year and never get tired of It. Are you planning on doing the whole trail with a shuttle or an in and back out the same way? Either way you can count me in.

To far out for me to say if I could make it yet but I figure since others posted a pic of looking over the falls, I would post a pic looking up at the falls.

Count me in. Been to the Cohutta's mucho times. Love it

Great thing about the trail setup in Cohutta is the ease of doing loops without feeling like you're walking a pointless circle.

Especially if you consider some of the un-maintained trails that aren't on the newer maps, but are still navigable.

Regardless of that, I think starting at the SW entry to CR Trail would be a good idea, with good hanging areas, and incorporating panther creek east, south or noth on E. Cowpen and around would be nice, depending on how much people like to hike.

Personally, I like to hike about 7-9 hours a day in the summer, which leaves plenty of time for waking up late, and hanging out late. However, I'm down for whatever the consensus is.

Camp Rice Trail is particularly nice this time of year when it's not drought-ish also.

I don't know much about this area, would someone put up a map of the possible route that might be taken, along with spots for possible hangin'?

Also, those of you that have pics of the last time you were there would be great to see. Thanks.
